Vigo crashed out of the Vase to a useful Surrey outfit and, as the cliché goes, can now concentrate on the League. It was no wonder that Chipstead won , with Vigo missing practically the whole of their first choice backs, and those that did play, were playing out of position. Chipstead took advantage of Vigo’s lack of familiarity with a blitzkrieg opening first quarter running in three tries and effectively putting the tie beyond Vigo. In only the second minute a strong run by Ollie Best down the wing was halted by a superb tackle by Vigo’s debutant full back, Drew Bennett, but Chipstead kept up the pressure for stand off Jim Whit to side step through for the opening try. Dan Martin converted easily. Chipstead posted their intentions right from the start as they tried to play expansive rugby, no mean feat on a sticky pitch whose contours reflected the rolling hills of the surrounding Surrey countryside. Vigo were still trying to acquaint themselves seemingly as they were ripped apart once more. Richard Cannon flew through a couple of minutes later, again converted by Martin. Chipstead continued to press, the muscular stand off, Whit, controlling the game with his centres angles of running threatening to overwhelm Vigo. A clearance kicked was charged down, the loose ball transferred adroitly to the left wing Ollie Best who crashed over to lengthen the lead, and effectively put the game beyond Vigo after just 20 minutes of play. |

Vigo crashed to a shock defeat at Swanswood to a committed Erith side who had only registered one win all season. Missing almost the whole of their first choice back division,( and losing Luke Spiers to injury early in the match didn’t help) Vigo can have no excuses in a lacklustre performance. Even with this rejigged back division, the pack supplied enough ball to overcome an Erith side languishing at the foot of the table. Perhaps Vigo underestimated their opponents, but one should never underestimate any team from Erith. |

Mid Kent League A
Vigo A 10 (Tries: Drew Bennett, Bob Fitton)
Sevenoaks IV 13 (Tries: Steve Carrick, Leon Galler
Pen: Steve Carrick)
This was arguably the best performance of the season for Vigo. The strong Sevenoaks outfit had only conceded 18 points all season, so for Vigo’s depleted second string to score two tries was exemplary. |
