Vigo’s second string achieved what they had been threatening for some weeks with a heavy defeat of Maidstone. As denuded of star performers as the senior side, Captain Colin Luck has instilled a sense of unity in the survivors and imbued a sense of togetherness with the odds and sods who make up the rest of his side. With Sean Gibbons, rather less svelte than his last appearance nearly two years ago making a welcome re-appearance and providing quick ball to Vigo’s threes, tries came along as frequently as Tiger Wood’s kiss and tell merchants. Maidstone, too, contributed to an entertaining match with their inside centre proving to be a real handful, keeping Vigo’s defence honest. Gibbons opened the scoring after great work by Darren Cox, whose generalship on the field was, as ever, constructive and reasoned. Although the distance travelled to score by the effervescent scrum half lengthened as the evening wore on, I have it on good authority that it was about a metre. Matt Griffiths, playing at outside centre, contributed some hefty running and was duly rewarded with a try as Vigo continued to press forward on the back of their dominant scrum and line out work. Matt’s impression of Superman as he flew over the line was in direct contrast to the celebration of the later try try by veteran centre, Dave Wiltshire, whose acclamation for his first try of the season was a rather gay whoop, or should I say, squeak. But more of that later. Max Gregory, gambolling round the field like a Jack Russell on ecstasy, scored his first of the season to increase the scoreline before Maidstone replied with a penalty before the excellent referee, Stewart Turner, blew for half time. Unfortunately Mr. Turner’s hamstrings were not as good as his interpretation of the Laws of Rugby, but he bravely struggled on, making sure that both sides were able to enjoy a game. Most commendable. |

A game of two halves that left the Villagers over the moon and the visitors sick as parrots.....OK, that’s the clichés out of the way.
Vigo welcomed Old Beccehamians for the first time to Swanswood on a murky, muddy day and proceeded to play murky, muddy rugby for the first half. The visitors were young, adventurous and well drilled up front but Vigo failed to pose too many problems with some poor passing and worse handling. The visiting centres, in which Sean Ellis, was particularly obdurate, soaked up the sporadic attacks by a fretful Vigo side, helped to a great extent by Vigo’s inability to string two passes together with any degree of accuracy. With first use of the slope, Vigo attempted to play the same expansive rugby as against HSBC the previous week, with basically the same results. Their back row of Hayes, porter and Couchman looked sharp and eager and turned over a stream of ball, only to see it wasted by profligacy outside. Beccehamians threatened with a sharp blind side move that sent Vigo into retreat mode, an excellent crossfield kick by Jim Bryan put them into panic mode and addled their collective brain enough to concede a penalty try. Bryan easily converted to give the visitors the lead. |

Vigo overcame a resolute HSBC in an error strewn match. The Villagers were arguably lucky to prevail as they insisted in trying to play champagne rugby when the occasion probably called for the flat beer variety. Too often Vigo tried to be expansive only for the execution not matching the ambition. However, it certainly kept the crowd on tenterhooks. I don’t know about oranges at half time for the players, but probably the long suffering Vigo supporters need Valium. Brent the Physio would need a bigger bag though, such is the team’s predilection for shredding the nerves. |
