Vigo crashed to a heavy defeat to a spirited and committed Olavians side on Saturday and again can only have themselves to blame. Dominating territory and possession, the Villagers either could not find their way through a determined defence or regularly coughed up possession which the opposition fed on hungrily to score. Vigo were probably affected by the journey – not the car journey, but the walk from the Club house to the pitch. With Olavians’ pitch out of commission, they used one of Westcombe Park’s spare pitches, known affectionately as the Cabbage Patch but should probably be redubbed the Eiger. With a slope that makes Old Gravesendians infamous pitch look like a Dutch polder, it did neither side any favours apart from altitude sickness for the spectators on the summit. Anyway, with Westcombe Park’s splendid clubhouse in Orpington and the pitch apparently in St Mary Cray, the teams and spectators set out on a journey resembling The Long March but without Chairman Mao to lift our spirits. In fact, I didn’t go as far on my honeymoon and certainly did not have as much fun, so dispiriting was Vigo’s eventual demise. |

Vigo have made a habit of shooting themselves in the foot and this match proved no exception. They contrived to hand the game to their visitors, although Sheppey earned praise for their never-say-die attitude securing victory deep into ‘Fergie time’. |
