Chairman’s Report:

Condolences were offered to Andy and Tim Carslaw on the news that their father Bill Carslaw had recently passed away.
The Chairman Sam Andrews reported that he felt that this year had been one of consolidation, with both the first and second teams staying up in their league.  The leagues were being reorganized next year but he felt that that would be good for our teams.

He thanked the team captains, Darren Cox, Martin Lingham and MG, the coaching staff Tos Spiers, Dave Oliver and Andy Carslaw and the club referees Stewart Turner, Tony Hill and Dave Oliver.

The chairman gave an overview of the year, he felt the tour went well, the extension had been finished and been open with only the refurbishment of the kitchen to be completed.  The youth were doing well with thanks to Mark Mickelburgh the youth chairman and his team.  The oldest team in the youth, the U 16’s should start to come through to the senior side next season.

REFLECTIONS ON THE ANNUAL DINNER & DANCE
Written by Administrator
Friday, 05 June 2009
The Dinner & Dance is an opportunity for the chaps to dress up, the memsahib’s to glam up and everyone to get p****d up. And this year was no exception. Copious amounts of alcohol were obviously imbibed judging by the dancing, the conversations and the projectile vomiting – not to mention the confessions on Facebook the next day.
Anyway, this year’s bash was held at Nurstead Court in a splendid marquee. The weather was nearly perfect , just a coldish wind keeping a few of those femmes with décolletage inside the marquee.
Dinner was served and seemed to go down well. Home made tomato soup, roast beef and all the trimmings and chocolate pud was well received, i believe. What was better received was the half dozen free bottles of wine on each table !
Whilst the coffees were being served David Oliver drew the 200 Club raffle and Jamie Caton (3rd), Ian Hall (2nd) and Mike Wren (1st) were delighted to receive some goodly cheques . Well, actually, they didn’t receive the cheques on the night (“Trust me, the cheques are in the post “ said our treasurer)
And actually Mike Wren wasn’t there, but I am sure he will be happy to receive the aforementioned large cheque in the post.
The well loved stand up, sit down bingo also saw a large amount of spondulicks find their way into the skyrocket of a happy guest. Real money this time. No vague promises of cheques in the post with the stand up, sit down bingo. Crikey, no. Actually James Weller wasn’t too sure of the concept of stand up, sit down bingo, so we shall be writing a simplified version of the game so that he can learn the concept by next year....or the year after perhaps.
Anyway, I digest.

Did I mention that the ladies looked rather splendid this year?
On to the awards.
Martin Lingham was first on the mike. That’s the microphone not Mike Wren, who would obviously be most attractive after his big win. Martin spoilt several people’s Skyplussing by announcing the results of Britain’s Got Talent. Apparently, some dancing troupe won, which was obviously why the Honey Monster was so active on the dance floor later, practising his moves for next year extravaganza. He was heard to mutter something about ‘’Stavros Flatley? You ain’t seen nothing yet).
Martin went through the usual list of people deserving his thanks and praise, none more so than his lovely wife, Lara , for  generously providing him with another daughter and her obvious patience with him and the interminable phone calls etc etc (and for doing the laundry).
Martin spoke of the battle for survival that his team endured after having been promoted last year. It was essential that the A XV remained in the League and he was proud of his team in the way that they overcame adversity to retain their place in the League.
Jeff Miles won the Special award for Most Ridiculous Bath Towel of the season, before the more serious awards were presented.

VIGO 45 - PRESIDENTS XV 10
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 26 April 2009

Vigo ended the season with a traditional match against a President’s XV, this year drawn from the University of Portsmouth, Alma Mater to Stuart Spiers and Matt Thorogood. On a warm, sunny day and the cares of League rugby over, Vigo were able to throw the ball around with gay abandon and entertain a good crowd.

Although tries came regularly for the Villagers, the Presidents XV showed tenacity in scoring two fine tries themselves in the second half, and making Vigo work hard to achieve the win. The opening quarter was decidedly cagey as both sides felt each other out.(I’m not sure if that had anything to do with the gay abandon but there you are). With Matt Thorogood leading the Presidents XV, Vigo knew that they would be facing a team with skill and determination so were content with jockeying for position before Luke Spiers opened the scoring for the home sideafter 12 minutes. The University had transgressed at several breakdowns before yet another penalty gave Dan Norton the opportunity of a quick tap. The ball sped quickly through the threes and Spiers cruised over, Norton converting. The Presidents XV continued to sin at the breakdown, the flank forward seemingly ignorant of the Laws through, it must be admitted, decided ring rustiness and the subsequent penalties gave Vigo momentum in the first half. Another penalty saw Vigo kick for touch, win the lineout and Stuart Spiers making a half break to thoroughly discombobulate the President’s defence. Swift recycling of the ball, a key to Vigo’s recent surge in form, saw Andy Wilford crash through, Norton again converting. Vigo continued to frolic in the sun and only some dodgy handling and good defence prevented them from adding to the score. The President’s Xv had some decidedly useful players in their team and number 8, Paul Jones, was proving to be the fulcrum of their effort, with centre Luke Peters adding muscularity in midfield. However, Vigo’s superior teamwork was always likely to prevail against a scratch team. The last play of the half saw Dan Couchman finish off a rumbling push over try for the excellent Vigo pack, who have enjoyed a fine season. Norton nonchalantly converted with a fine kick from wide out.
